its just like any other dry skin. except on your scalp it gets really bad because we can't see it and we can't put lotion on it or it gets your hair all gross. You have to use a shampoo like head and shoulders which is basically lotion for your scalp. |

Its caused by dry skin. |

yes. use a conditioner. also, use head and shoulders, and leave the conditioner in longer. also try not washing the conditoner completely out of your hair, it will help very much. there are a number of products on the market, should you not find the results you are looking for at home. just like the other guy said though, it IS from dry skin. |

There is 2 anwsers to this, one of which you are not supose to know. Dry scalp is logically means you are not drinking enough water, the other is hardcore dandruff which is just something hat is genetic and you can get rid of it by using a poduct like head and shoulders for a little while. also try going an extra day without washing your hair and see what happens. If your hair becomes too greasy, then you are washing with too harsh of products that are stripping natural enzymes that you need in your hair.
Give drinking some more water a try, you might be happy with the results. |

Most people think is mostly just dry scalp, but the most common reason for dandruff is a fungal infection of sorts. Sounds gross I know but it isn't anything harmful or that gross. You can try to use a mainstream quick cure like head and shoulders, but it is better to go to a pharmacy and talk to someone who knows that area. Sometimes the stuff from behind the counter is better. |

When your scalp gets sunburn then it can peel and you can get dandruff. Otherwise the other posts are also true. |

What is dandruff?
The skin of the scalp has many layers. Cells start growing in the dermis at the bottom, and eventually they form a layer of dead cells on the surface of the skin. Normally these dead cells fall off in tiny flakes, which we don't even notice. Washing or brushing your hair helps to get rid of the flakes.
These tiny flakes are not dandruff!!
Dandruff is a type of dermatitis (called seborrheic dermatitis).
This dermatitis causes itching and flaking on patches of the scalp.
The scalp of people with dandruff, sheds many bigger greasy flakes, and these are what we call dandruff.
Dandruff can be distressing for the person who has it because the flakes can be seen in the hair and on the clothes.
Some people might think you don't take good care of your appearance, even when you are trying hard - but really, most people won't notice these flakes as much as you do!
Why do some people get dandruff?
It is not clear why some people get dandruff, and others don't, but there are some things that we do know about it.
It seems to start happening around puberty, when a lot more oil is made by glands at the base of each hair. This oil holds the tiny flakes together to make bigger, more noticeable flakes. Boys get more oily hair than girls, and boys have dandruff more often than girls.
A tiny fungus seems to be part of the reason people get dandruff. This fungus is called Malassezia (mal-a-sea-zee-a) or sometimes Pityrosporum (pit-ee-rose-por-um). This fungus makes the skin cells grow much faster, so there are a lot more dead cells, and these mix with the hair oils to make the bigger flakes.
There are some other things that can cause flaky, itchy skin, such as ringworm and other types of dermatitis. Your doctor would be able to look at your hair and tell you if you have one of these problems, or just dandruff.
What can you do about dandruff?
Well, the first thing is to work out if you really have dandruff, or if you just have the normal tiny flakes of dead cells which everyone has. A lot of money is made from persuading people that they have dandruff, and that they just have to use this latest, greatest treatment or else they will be social outcasts.
Have a talk with your mum or dad, or with your doctor, to see whether you really do have a problem.
There are several different things you can try to see if you can improve your scalp health.
First, if you have oily hair, using a gentle shampoo every day will get rid of the extra oil. Since the oil holds the tiny flakes together, making big, noticeable flakes, getting rid of the oil is enough for some people.
Avoid hair products like hair gels. These hold on to the tiny flakes, making bigger lumps as well.
See if you can have a bit more zinc in your diet. Zinc is one of the things that seems to help keep skin healthy. Food sources for zinc include egg yolks, fish, meat, soybeans, sunflower seeds and whole grains.
Get a little sunshine. This does not give you 'permission' to sunbake and develop a tan. The sun can still damage your skin if you stay out too long, but a little bit of sun onto your scalp seems to help.
Dandruff treatments
There are treatments, such as anti-dandruff shampoos, which can be helpful if you are having problems with dandruff.
You can get many of the shampoos 'over-the-counter' at chemist shops.
Different types of shampoos work in different ways, and some can affect the colour of your hair, and some people can be allergic to some of the products. So have a talk to the chemist before you spend your money.
When you use one of these products, it is important to leave it on your scalp for five minutes before you wash it off.
You may need to use one of these shampoos every day for a while, then, as the dandruff gets better, use the product about twice a week for a while.
If you have dandruff that is not getting better even when you have tried a couple of different types of products, go back to see your doctor. He or she may be able to prescribe a different treatment which could work. |

okay first of all dandruff is just dry skin and everyone could have it, but to keep it from getting out of control you should buy selson blue or head and shoulders.
dont aply the shampo to your scalp and hair JUST put it on the scalp or the spots that are dry
another reason for dandruff is STRESS, if you have exams or tests or work you can get dandruff
just remember that your not the only one and its curable!

yes the skin is either irritated or some skin infection has creeped in. You say that tiny little flakes are visible then it means the dandruff is dry in nature the wet one would be pasty one. The best thing to do is avoid strong shampoo and soap while washing your hair. Wash your hair with ordinary shampoo and then wash your hair with selsun anti dandruff solution. this you allow to remain on the scalp for 2 minutes before you wash it completely. Then dry your hair and then apply boiled and cooled pure cocunut oil in very little quantity. This you do everyday for a month and your dandruff would be gone. If there is terrible itching then while washing you can soak a crystal of alum and gently rub it on the head so that all the scalp gets the alum and then wash it normally. Do this regularly for one month and then see the result. all the best. |

It's just dry skin, everybody gets it. Its just really noticeable on some other people, which is why they make shampoo like Head and Shoulders. |

Have you tried Head and Shoulders or a dandruff specific shampoo? You might be shampooing too much.
There are worse problems to have, this is probably very manageable. |

Your skin dies and is constantly renewing itself. The dead skin flakes off as dandruff. Welcome to life. |

It's just dry skin. I get it from staying out in the sun too long. Also, if the climate you live in is dry that will contribute to it. I recommend Selsun Blue at least 3 days a week. Use a good shampoo & conditioner like Dove. I've used them before and they are very good. They make your hair really soft. When you wash your hair, try using shampoo only every other day or every other wash, but use conditioner. I know it sounds gross, but it will make your hair more shiny (in a non-gross way) and help put the oils back in your head which is what you are lacking right now. |

Dandruff is due to excessive shedding of dead cells from the scalp. Again dandruff is not living; but just dead skin that had accumulated on the scalp.
Since it's normal for skin this to happen, small amounts of flaking is normal & actually commonplace.
Some though have excessive flaking caused by many things including;
Stressors or other triggers,
Seborrhoeic dermatitis,
Psoriasis,
Fungal infections,
or excoriation due to head lice.
Most cases of dandruff can be easily treated with specialized shampoos during proper hygiene rituals :) |
|

Pavel
 |
it is usually because the person has dry skin. |

There are very many causes:
- dry scalp, if your skin is overall dry and you wash your head a lot then you'll probably get some flaking
- allergies, poor health, hormonal disbalance, etc.
- fungus, in this case anit-dandruff shampoos work very well, supposedly this kind of dandruff gets worse in winters |

It could be the nature of the scalp or the person hasn't washed properly after washing their hair. Unless there's severe itchiness, it shouldnt be a problem. |

that is just dead skin on the scalp |
