Can't seem to get out my depression?
Im 19 and I've been feeling very low for too long now and have been secluding myself from all my friends for about 2 months. my parents have been my rock during the 2months and my two sisters are great to talk to. My doctor wanted to put me on antidepressents but I said no initially hoping that counselling would be better but I'm having to wait 10 weeks (now only 3weeks left) to see a councellor. In the mean time I think I should go on antideppessents because I have got considerably worse and have suicidal thoughts. However I won't be able to make an appointment until monday. In the mean time what should I do?

thanks :)

Definitely get antidepressants. This won't get better without. If you feel suicidal to the point where you may actuaaly harm yourself, ring The Samaritans (The number should be in the 'phone directory)or NHS DIRECT on 98454647. Keep talking to your parents. You will feel so much better once you get the right medication

While waiting to see the doc, lean on your family for support. They have helped you this far from the sounds of things.
Antidepressants are the great evil some people make them out to be, in fact they are the only thing that keep me on a sane level plane of existance!
Talk to your folks when you feel yourself getting too low, they obviously care about you! =)

try and keep calm, i am on antideppressants, didnt want them as i believe in sorting yourself out, but i got really bad before xmas and felt the way you do only not suicidal, i was shoutin all the time, also one day i could be happy the next really angry or sad. i am still on them at the moment, but want to come off them as i am much better, although i cant stop right away. i waited nearly a week for another prescription for them and i was uptight and edgy, but they are working again and i am going to go to the doctors next week to see if i can wean myself of them. I find that excercise and healthy eating improves your mood, you should try it, it works for me. good luck!!

i felt low and luckily i got to see a counsellor, one piece of advice i got was. accept the way you feel at any particular time. i you feel low, accept that is the way you feel, it wont last forever but i got even more frustrated and angry tryigng to fight the way i felt, and although it took time to come through it i didnt feel as bad once i accepted it. as hard as it may be, look to your friends to do things with, exercise and have fun, dont drink cos that will make it worse but be around others and you may soon see that your mind is on other things. keep turning to your family also, they are the ones who love you unconditionally and will always be there. above all know that you can get through this and there is always light at the end of the tunnel. good luck! if you need 2 talk then you can add me as a contact and ill be happy to have a chat!

Hold on to the fact that to commit suicide will only leave your family in pain...you certainly don't wish to do that. Nothing will be solved by doing so. Hang on to that thought, know that you have pushed through the last while and you can get through til you see your doctor and know that taking medication is not a weakness or failure on your part, it is what your body is in need of right now to mend itself.

We can't control some things and least of all certain chemicals that make up our brain...a chemical imbalance is a hard thing to work through when it hits us with depression, especially if we think we can do it all on our own. You've gotten this far darlin' only a few steps more and you're on the way back to being you again. Meds will have you getting more and more comfortable and in control every day...let your doc know right away if side effects out of the norm begin (suicidal thoughts increase, disorientation, etc.) He can readjust dosages or change meds til you are okay, but DO NOT stop his treatments unless absolutely certain they are doing no good. Your doctor will work with you til all is right...my doctor went through over 13 years with me trying to find the combination that would work correctly and not cause me to react dreadfully, however, I am an oddity...I react to almost everything no one else does. I have to take a quarter of what a normal dosage is so as not to react, if others do react I end up being able to take that...odd but me. His words to me when I was finally stabalized were, "I never thought it would take this long, but I never gave up and I'm very glad you hung in there with me, good stuff! You are my hero!"

It all takes time but you are on the right track...your family is wonderful and you've got a lot of support...hang on to that you are doing your best and you will make it to monday and then make it the 3 weeks to the counseling.

Meantime gather those things, people, activities around you that will comfort, support and capture your attention for now. Sitting by yourself or alone in your room is placing yourself in a vacuum with your thoughts. You don't have to even leave home if that isn't what is possible...just watching a good movie, doing a hobby, even mucking around on the computer...it all helps distract you, you may still feel down, you might find it hard to concentrate at times...you may be tired, disinterested...all the above and more, but you are obviously a strong person and you can accept these things for just a little while longer...know these things will be part of who you are right now and know that you are in charge, not the thoughts or feelings...you will get through this all and when you come out the other side you will have additional tools, knowledge to help you in the future if it should ever try to sneak up on you again.

Good luck darlin' you WILL be okay...

Don't be afraid to let your support group know that you're having suicidal thoughts. They are your safety net right now. Let them be there for you. If your doc gives you meds they will take a little while to take effect and you need support during that time. Counselling is good but a lot of times we need the meds as well. Suicidal thoughts are frightening - please phone someone, anyone when they come. If all else fails and you're afraid you might harm yourself...go to an emerg. Do you have a school counsellor or minister or someone else who is trained? Ask someone to be with you. Please don't hurt yourself. I know this is a terrifying time for you but with help you will recover.

Depression is one of those things I am afraid, I suffer on and off with it myself and sometimes it can be so bad you want out full stop. So I can relate to your situation.
The anti depressants don't always work and it depends on you as an individual, personally when I first started with anti depressants I was given Prozac but felt like I was walking on the moon most days and with a small child at the time I did not continue with them.
I spent almost three years controlling my depression with self help and was doing great, I saw a counsellor and was told that councelling cannot help you get better, but can help you to understand your illness so that you are able to deal with it!!

That is what it is, a mental illness. But don't be phased by that. People think because mental is placed before the illness that you are a loony lol but that's just their ignorance and misunderstanding to it, it is an illness and it can be controlled not always with drugs but by finding out as much about yourself as you can. Why you think you feel this way, what makes you feel better about yourself etc etc, learning what you are dealing with helps you overcome it.

These days my depression is mostly stress related and I took a turn for the worst after I lost my dad to cancer, so I have pills which help calm my body down, however most anti depressants actually cause depression as one of the side effects????? Go figure I know, but if you are having suicidal tendencies/thoughts you need to express that very clearly to your doctor, as the pills the doctor gives you are very important (some may send you over the edge etc)

I am afraid, there is no cure nor quick fix/solution to depression. If you are suffering now, chances are you will always suffer from it. That is not very reassuring I know and it is hard to shake the feelings off that make you want to end your own life, but with help and support from loved ones and proper councelling you will learn how to live with it, like I said, there is no cure but there is a way to live with it.

I tell myself on really bad days that all I am just having a BAD day, which everyone has at some point. I focus upon the things which have helped me through in the past, such as my partner and our children, my Art work and music is brilliant for the soul I find!! The last thing you should do, is panic and fear that there is something really wrong with you. Although this is an illness it doesn't mean you are strange or different from others in any sense other than this.........
People who suffer with depression have a chemical imbalance in the brain, say we have 50% happy chemicals and 50% sad, when we are faced with something upsetting or hard to deal with emotionally we feel sad, our 50% happy chemicals are suppose to multiply and overcome the sad so we are able to deal with the situation.

Someone who suffers from long term depression has 60% sad chemical and only 40% happy (this is just an example lol)so when the same event occurs the sad chemicals get out a bottle of vodka and have a party in your head lol I am explaining this as light heartily as I can, its more technical than this but I am not a doctor, just someone who has spent 14 years of my life battling with depression.

Having people who can relate to what is going on in your mind is the most positive thing as we tend to believe there is something wrong with us because we handle things differently. Talking to others who know what we are feeling lets us know we are not alone and it is actually a more common illness than people want to believe!!!

The best advice I can offer you, is to go to councelling, try the anti depressants for at least 6 months because that's how long they take to have any effect, but tell your doctor of your suicidal thoughts, so that they don't give you a drug that will be harmful to you. Listen to the councillor, they know what they are talking about!!! Try to get as much information about depression as you can to help you understand what your going through and how to deal with it. Its hard, but from me to you it doesn't have to be the end of the road, you can learn to live with it. You are always welcome to talk to me if you want some more advice or just a friendly ear!! Take care xx

Mr. November
Sounds likr u need a goo dfriend to talk to about your life as well..... I used to think of these as in the head... it will go away... but it look like you need a friend..

Last year, during my senior year of college, I too felt very low and depressed. My grandfather had passed away the year before and I had major anxieties about leaving school and heading into the real world. My parents were my rock and I felt that going to the doctor and having him suggest antidepressants was not for me either. I felt that this was something that I had to work through and that no medication would be helpful. I continued to talk to my parents and a few very close friends on campus. Soon, I was back to my normal self and had a great last semester of college. In fact it was my best semester during my college experience.

I would say that talking to someone about your sucidial thoughts is extemely critical at this time. Let your parents know that you are having these thoughts and talk to them about why perhaps you are having these thoughts. Telling someone is the first step. This is something that you can not keep to yourself.

I would say definetly make the appointment on monday and just try and work through the weekend. I know that this weeked is Easter and if you celebrate this holdiday, surround yourself with your family. They love you and want to see you come back to being your usual self. Depression is a serious issue and not something that should be taken lightly. Good luck and I hope that this helps.
